How sixteen bars of freestyle secured a legendary hip-hop contract
In short: In 2005, a young Detroit rapper walked into a radio station with nothing but a demo tape and a bold request. He asked Kanye West for just sixteen bars. What happened next would launch a decade of chart-topping hits and a complex, lifelong professional bond.
The trajectory of Sean Michael Leonard Anderson, known as Big Sean, changed fundamentally during a radio interview at 102.7 FM. Seeking to meet Kanye West, the then-teenager performed a freestyle that reportedly moved West to head-bob in the station's doorway. This encounter led to Anderson signing with West's G.O.O.D. Music imprint in 2007, a partnership that defined much of his early career.
His rise was fueled by a prolific mixtape era, notably the 2010 release of Finally Famous Vol. 3: Big, which featured heavyweights like Drake and Tyga. By 2015, his third studio album, Dark Sky Paradise, achieved number one on the Billboard 200, propelled by the diamond-certified single "I Don't Fuck with You." This era solidified his status as a commercial powerhouse, with subsequent albums like I Decided (2017) and Detroit 2 (2020) also debuting at the top of the charts.
However, the relationship with West was not without friction. In 2021, Anderson announced he was parting ways with G.O.O.D. Music to seek a larger share of his earnings, describing the split as a business necessity despite their 'forever brotherhood.' The tension was echoed by West himself, who later described signing the rapper as the 'worst decision' of his career. Despite these industry shifts and high-profile leaks, Anderson continues to evolve, recently announcing collaborations with producers like The Alchemist.
