In short: In 2004, Kanye West launched GOOD Music as a joint venture with Sony BMG. It would become a powerhouse, producing nine number-one albums and two number-one singles. Yet, the man who built it later expressed deep regret over the very structure of the business.

Founded shortly after the release of 'The College Dropout,' GOOD Music was designed to house West's expanding production work and a roster of diverse talent. The label saw immediate commercial success with its first release, John Legend's 'Get Lifted' in 2004, which won three Grammy Awards. Over the next decade, the roster expanded to include artists like Common, Big Sean, Kid Cudi, and Pusha T, eventually securing a distribution deal with Island Def Jam Music Group in 2011.

Despite its massive output—including high-profile projects like 'The Life of Pablo' and 'Jesus Is King'—West admitted in 2007 that running a record label was his biggest mistake. He cited the logistical burden of approving creative details like clothing and music for other artists as a distraction from his own artistic focus. This tension between being a curator and a creator became a recurring theme in the label's history.

The label's internal dynamics have been marked by significant shifts. Pusha T served as president from 2015 until late 2022, when he stepped down due to a breakdown in communication with West. Similarly, Big Sean departed the label in 2021 after 14 years, citing a need for a larger financial share. In a 2018 leaked video, West even expressed a desire to dissolve the label entirely, suggesting that the existence of the company was an obstacle to his own greatness.

Today, the label remains a complex entity under West's holding company, Mascotte Holdings. While it has faced distribution changes and public disputes with its primary artists, its legacy is defined by a decade of high-charting hits and a unique production wing known as Very Good Beats.
