In short: Born Henry McCarty, the man known as Billy the Kid became a symbol of the American West. While myths suggest he killed 21 men, historical records link him to only nine. His short, violent life ended at 21, yet his legend persisted through decades of claims that he survived.

Born in New York City in 1859, Henry McCarty was orphaned by age 14. His path to notoriety began in 1875 with arrests for stealing food and clothing in Silver City, New Mexico. By 1877, he had adopted the alias William H. Bonney. His reputation solidified during the 1878 Lincoln County War, a violent conflict between rival business factions. McCarty, fighting for the side of rancher John Henry Tunstall, was involved in the deaths of Sheriff William J. Brady and others.

Following the war, McCarty sought amnesty from Territorial Governor Lew Wallace, but the deal collapsed, leading to his imprisonment and a death sentence for the murder of Sheriff Brady. In April 1881, he staged a daring escape from the Lincoln County courthouse, killing two deputies in the process. He remained a fugitive until July 14, 1881, when Sheriff Pat Garrett tracked him to Fort Sumner and shot him dead in a dark bedroom at the home of Pete Maxwell.

Despite a coroner's jury confirming his death, the legend of Billy the Kid proved difficult to kill. In the decades that followed, numerous men claimed to be the outlaw, suggesting he had escaped Garrett's ambush. The most famous of these, Brushy Bill Roberts, sought a pardon from the New Mexico governor in 1948. While historians generally dismiss these survival claims, the enduring fascination with his life has fueled over 50 films and cemented his status as one of the most notorious figures of the Old West.
