Billy Claiborne: The forgotten outlaw who fled the O.K. Corral and died seeking revenge
In short: Billy Claiborne was a minor figure in the American Old West whose reputation never recovered after he fled the infamous O.K. Corral shootout. A heavy drinker and hothead, he spent his final year obsessed with killing the man he blamed for a friend's death, only to meet his own end.
Born in 1860, Billy Claiborne worked as a cowhand and miner before becoming a peripheral member of the group known as the Cowboys in Tombstone, Arizona. His early notoriety came from killing James Hickey in a saloon confrontation in 1881, an act a jury eventually ruled as self-defense after multiple mistrials. Following the death of William 'Billy the Kid' Bonney, Claiborne aggressively demanded the same nickname, reportedly killing men who refused to address him by it.
Claiborne’s most famous moment was his presence at the O.K. Corral on October 26, 1881. While he stood with the Clantons and McLaurys, he was unarmed and fled the scene as soon as the shooting began. This retreat severely damaged his standing among his peers. He later left Tombstone for Globe, working in mines while saving money to return and kill 'Buckskin' Frank Leslie, whom he blamed for the death of his friend Johnny Ringo.
On November 14, 1882, a drunken Claiborne confronted Leslie at the Oriental Saloon. After being escorted out, he waited outside with a rifle. When Leslie stepped out, Claiborne fired first but missed. Leslie returned fire, striking Claiborne in the chest. Claiborne died six hours later. While some once speculated he was William Floyd Claiborne of Mississippi, records prove this impossible, as that man was alive and living in Yazoo County years after the outlaw’s death. Today, he remains a footnote in history, occasionally appearing in dramatizations of the O.K. Corral, such as the Star Trek episode 'Spectre of the Gun'.
