In short: What happens when a secret agent's double life is threatened by the London underworld? In Joe Barton's acclaimed Netflix series, the pursuit of political and industrial secrets becomes a personal battle for survival, featuring a cast of heavyweights and a plot that ventures where even James Bond might hesitate.

Black Doves is a British spy action thriller created by Joe Barton and developed by the production companies Sister and Noisy Bear. The narrative centers on a clandestine organization known as the 'Black Dovess,' a group of spies-for-hire that operates by retrieving industrial, political, or diplomatic secrets for the highest bidder. The show's title itself has a humble origin, derived from Barton's local pub in Brighton.

The series follows Helen Webb, played by Keira Knightley, who leads a precarious double life. As the wife of the UK Secretary of State for Defence, Wallace Webb, Helen is a secret spy whose identity is jeopardized after her lover is killed by London's criminal underworld. To ensure her safety, the Black Doves organization dispatches Sam, an old friend, to act as her protector. The ensemble cast is extensive, featuring notable actors such as Ben Whishaw, Sarah Lancashire, and Andrew Buchan, with roles spanning from the UK Prime Minister to CIA agents.

Critically, the series has been met with significant praise. On Rotten Tomatoes, it holds a 94% positive rating from 70 critics, with an average score of 7.8/10. Metacritic also provided a generally favorable score of 78 out of 100. While some critics, such as Rebecca Nicholson of The Guardian, offered mild critiques of the lead performances, others, like David Opie of Digital Spy, noted the show's willingness to explore bold narrative territory. Following its premiere on 5 December 2024, Netflix moved quickly to renew the series for a second season, which is scheduled to premiere on 5 November 2026.
