How a 1971 Spy Thriller Became a Modern-Day Streaming Hit for Eddie Redmayne
In short: Frederick Forsyth’s classic novel about a cold-blooded assassin has been reimagined for television. Starring Eddie Redmayne as a meticulous marksman and Lashana Lynch as his relentless pursuer, the 2024 series updates the original cat-and-mouse hunt for a contemporary audience, exploring the human cost behind a life of professional violence.
The 2024 television adaptation, created by Ronan Bennett, shifts the narrative of the 1971 source material into a modern, globalized setting. While the original book centered on a plot to kill Charles de Gaulle in 1962, the series follows an enigmatic sniper known as the Jackal, who is hired by a powerful businessman to eliminate a tech entrepreneur. This reimagining provides a deeper look into the assassin’s personal life, including his marriage and military background as a former British special forces soldier who faked his own death.
The production, commissioned by Sky and Peacock in November 2022, emphasizes the psychological toll of the hunt. Lashana Lynch portrays Bianca Pullman, an MI6 weapons expert whose obsession with capturing the Jackal leads to significant personal and professional sacrifices. As the series progresses, the Jackal’s attempts to protect his family collide with his high-stakes assignments, creating a complex web of deceit that ultimately results in tragic consequences for the intelligence team chasing him.
The show’s influence extends beyond entertainment, echoing the real-world notoriety of the original novel. Historically, the book was linked to figures like Ilich Ramirez Sánchez, known as Carlos the Jackal, and Vladimir Arutyunian, who studied the text before his 2005 assassination attempt on George W. Bush. The new series, however, focuses on the cat-and-mouse dynamic between the Jackal and Bianca, culminating in a finale that sets the stage for a second season involving unresolved debts and shifting power dynamics within the shadowy world of international finance and espionage.
