In short: In the mid-1980s, a New Jersey garage band was busy building a musical legacy. From basement jam sessions to a massive Grammy-winning success, the journey of Blues Traveler is a story of unexpected inspiration, sudden tragedy, and a relentless drive to keep playing.

Formed in Princeton, New Jersey, in 1987, Blues Traveler began as a high school garage band. The group's identity was shaped by a basement jam session known as 'The Black Cat Jam,' where a nearby black cat was taken as a sign and adopted as the band's mascot. Interestingly, the band's name was not inspired by the blues alone, but by the demon Gozer the Traveler from the film Ghostbusters.

Their 1994 release, Four, marked their greatest commercial success, moving upwards of six million units globally. This era saw hits like "Run-Around" and "Hook," with the former winning a Grammy Award and setting a record for most weeks on the charts. During this period, the group also founded the H.O.R.D.E. touring music festival alongside other acts like Phish and the Spin Doctors.

However, the path to success was not without significant hardship. The death of bassist Bobby Sheehan in 1999 due to an accidental drug overdose deeply impacted the group. This loss, combined with frontman John Popper's struggles with obesity, contributed to the band being dropped by A&M Records in 2002. Despite these setbacks, the band has remained active, transitioning through various independent labels and even featuring guest appearances by figures like Bruce Willis.

Today, the lineup includes Tad Kinchla and Ben Wilson, who joined following Sheehan's death. The band continues to release music, including a blues covers album, Traveler's Blues, which earned a Grammy nomination for Best Traditional Blues in 2022.
