How a near-fatal plane crash and a movie theme song defined a rock band
In short: Survivor is best known for the 1982 anthem Eye of the Tiger, but the band's origins are rooted in a brush with death. Jim Peterik, who co-founded the group in 1978, narrowly escaped a plane crash that killed his former bandmates, an event that profoundly shaped his perspective on survival.
The band's name was inspired by a 1976 album liner note that described Jim Peterik as a survivor, a sentiment reinforced by his 1974 decision to skip a concert in Jackson, Minnesota. He missed a flight that subsequently crashed, claiming the lives of Bill Chase and most of his jazz-rock fusion band. In 1978, after his own band dissolved, Peterik was persuaded by road manager Rick Weigand to meet guitarist Frankie Sullivan. They recruited singer Dave Bickler, and the group officially adopted the name Survivor during a high school prom performance in Elgin, Illinois.
While their self-titled 1979 debut struggled, the band achieved global fame in 1982 after Sylvester Stallone requested a theme song for Rocky III. The resulting track, Eye of the Tiger, topped the US Billboard Hot 100 for six weeks and won a Grammy Award. Despite this success, the band faced constant turbulence. Bickler was fired in 1983 following vocal cord surgery, leading to the arrival of Jimi Jamison. Under Jamison, the band enjoyed a massive comeback with hits like High on You and The Search Is Over, though they struggled to maintain momentum due to label disputes and internal friction.
The band's later years were defined by legal battles and shifting lineups. In the 1990s, both Peterik and Jamison toured under the Survivor name, leading to unsuccessful lawsuits over trademark rights. Peterik eventually departed in 1996, leaving Sullivan as the primary original member. The band's final studio album, Reach, arrived in 2006, marking their first release in 18 years. The group continued to navigate personnel changes, including the return of Jamison in 2011 and his subsequent death in 2014, leaving a complex legacy of commercial peaks and persistent instability.
