Bo French and the rise of far-right rhetoric in Texas energy commission politics
In short: Bo French, the Republican nominee for Texas Railroad Commissioner, has built a political career on inflammatory social media commentary and aggressive cultural grievances. Despite the commission's focus on oil and gas regulation, French’s campaign centers on anti-immigrant, antisemitic, and Islamophobic rhetoric, drawing sharp criticism from both political parties.
Born in the late 1960s, Richard West "Bo" French transitioned from a career in private equity and business partnerships—including a contentious venture with American Sniper author Chris Kyle—into the political arena. After two unsuccessful bids for the Texas House of Representatives, French served as chair of the Tarrant County Republican Party from October 2023 until his resignation in November 2025. His tenure was marked by frequent controversies, including the promotion of white nationalist conspiracy theories and the use of racial and homophobic slurs on social media.
French’s current campaign for Texas Railroad Commissioner has drawn national attention for its departure from traditional energy policy. While the commission is tasked with regulating the state's oil and gas industry, French has focused his platform on "stopping the Islamic invasion" and curbing foreign influence in Texas. His rhetoric has included calls for the mass deportation of 100 million people, the banning of Islam, and the implementation of policies modeled after the white supremacist state of Rhodesia. These positions have been described by observers as utilizing fascist blood-and-soil language.
The campaign has faced significant backlash. In the March 2026 primary, French narrowly defeated incumbent Jim Wright, who dismissed French’s priorities as irrelevant to the commission's actual duties. Despite endorsements from Governor Greg Abbott, French has been condemned by prominent Republicans, including Senator John Cornyn and strategist Karl Rove, for his history of intolerant remarks. Reports have also surfaced regarding deleted social media posts in which French called for the public execution of various public figures, including former President Barack Obama. As the general election approaches, French remains a polarizing figure, representing a shift toward extreme cultural warfare in state-level politics.
