A century of deli tradition faces a reckoning after a massive food safety crisis
In short: Founded in 1905, Boar's Head grew from a small Brooklyn operation into a dominant force in American deli counters. Yet, recent years have unveiled a stark contrast between its premium brand image and the reality of its manufacturing facilities, leading to a historic health crisis and widespread legal scrutiny.
Established in 1905 by Frank Brunckhorst, the company initially focused on distributing cold cuts and hot dogs. By 1933, Brunckhorst and partners Bruno Bischoff and Theodore Weiler opened their first manufacturing plant in Brooklyn. The business remained family-controlled, eventually shifting its strategy in the 1990s to prioritize exclusive partnerships with supermarket chains, such as its long-standing relationship with Publix. This focus on retail integration supported the company's expansion into states like Virginia, Arkansas, and Michigan, and its 2001 move to Sarasota, Florida.
The company's reputation faced a severe challenge in 2024 following a listeriosis outbreak. The CDC linked the outbreak to Boar's Head products, resulting in 59 hospitalizations and 10 deaths as of September 25, 2024. This event was the largest listeriosis outbreak recorded since 2011. In response, the company recalled over 7 million pounds of products produced at its Jarratt, Virginia, facility. Inspections conducted between August 2023 and July 2024 revealed systemic sanitation failures, including black mold, meat residue on surfaces, and substances dripping from ceilings. The Jarratt plant was closed indefinitely in September 2024.
Legal and regulatory scrutiny intensified following these revelations. Multiple lawsuits have been filed against the company, alleging issues ranging from false advertising to wrongful death. Further USDA inspection records released in January 2025 exposed similar unsanitary conditions at other facilities, such as the plant in Petersburg, Virginia, where inspectors noted recurring failures to prevent product contamination. Despite these challenges, the company continues to face ongoing safety concerns, including a voluntary recall of pecorino romano cheese in November 2025 due to positive listeria testing. These events have forced a re-evaluation of the company's long-standing operational standards.
