In short: Before it became the symbol of the London gentleman or the American outlaw, the bowler hat was a functional tool. Commissioned in 1849 to solve a specific problem for gamekeepers, this hard-felt design was built to withstand the elements and physical impact, eventually conquering fashion across the globe.

In 1849, London hat-makers Thomas and William Bowler were commissioned by James Lock & Co. to create a durable, low-crowned hat. The design was intended for gamekeepers who found traditional top hats impractical; they were easily knocked off by low-hanging branches while the men were on horseback. The resulting hat was so robust that Edward Coke, who commissioned it, reportedly tested its strength by placing it on the floor and stamping on it twice before paying 12 shillings for the piece.

The hat’s utility quickly transcended its humble origins. In the American West, it became the preferred headwear for cowboys and railroad workers because it remained secure in high winds. Figures ranging from lawmen like Bat Masterson to outlaws such as Billy the Kid adopted the style, leading historian Lucius Beebe to dub it the hat that won the West. Meanwhile, in the United Kingdom, it evolved into the quintessential uniform of the City of London businessman, a tradition that persisted until the 1970s.

The bowler’s cultural footprint is remarkably diverse. It became a staple of early cinema, worn by Charlie Chaplin and Laurel and Hardy, and a recurring motif in the surrealist paintings of René Magritte. In Bolivia, it has been worn by indigenous Quechua and Aymara women since the 1920s, while in the Philippines, it remains a symbol of the 1896 revolution, famously worn by national hero José Rizal during his execution. From the protective gear of 19th-century gamekeepers to a global icon of style and protest, the bowler remains one of the most versatile accessories in history.
