A veteran congressman who once led a revolt against a major economic bailout bill
In short: Brad Sherman has served in the U.S. House of Representatives since 1997, building a reputation as a combative legislator. From challenging party leadership during the 2008 financial crisis to advocating for a total ban on cryptocurrency, Sherman remains a polarizing figure known for his intense, often confrontational approach to governance.
Born in Los Angeles in 1954, Sherman is a Certified Public Accountant and attorney who transitioned from a career in accounting to politics. He served on the California State Board of Equalization between 1991 and 1997, a period marked by heated public clashes with political opponents. Since his election to Congress in 1996, he has represented various districts in the San Fernando Valley. His tenure has been defined by a focus on foreign policy, trade, and financial regulation, often placing him at odds with both Republican and Democratic leadership.
Sherman is perhaps best known for his vocal opposition to the Emergency Economic Stabilization Act of 2008. He led a revolt against the bill, arguing that the Bush administration manufactured a sense of panic to force lawmakers into a quick approval. This stance made him deeply unpopular with the political establishment at the time. His legislative record is similarly assertive; he has pushed for a ban on cryptocurrency, citing national security risks, and introduced articles of impeachment against President Donald Trump in 2017.
Despite his long career, Sherman has faced significant internal criticism. In 2017, former staff members described his offices as having a toxic environment, alleging frequent verbal abuse and a culture that discouraged reporting misconduct. While Sherman acknowledged being a demanding boss, he denied that his management style contributed to the silence surrounding the behavior of his former district director, Matt Dababneh. Surveys of Capitol Hill staff have frequently ranked him among the most difficult members of Congress to work for, citing high turnover rates.
Sherman maintains a strong focus on international affairs, particularly the U.S.-Israel relationship, which he consistently supports. He has been a vocal critic of Qatar-based Al Jazeera, accusing its owners of funding Hamas. Domestically, he is a staunch supporter of LGBT rights and the Affordable Care Act, while consistently opposing trade agreements like NAFTA and CAFTA, which he argues harm American workers and the environment.
