In short: The Brazilian Football Confederation, or CBF, governs the world's most successful national team. Yet, it began as a sprawling organization managing every sport in the country. It only became a football-exclusive entity in 1979, forced by a FIFA mandate that reshaped the landscape of Brazilian sports administration forever.

The origins of the CBF trace back to 1914, when the Brazilian Sports Federation was established to oversee all athletic activities. By 1916, this entity evolved into the Brazilian Sports Confederation (CBD). For decades, the CBD served as the umbrella organization for all Olympic sports in Brazil, including football. This arrangement persisted until 24 September 1979, when FIFA issued a decree requiring national football associations to focus exclusively on the sport. Consequently, the CBD split, and the CBF emerged as the dedicated governing body for Brazilian football.

The history of the CBF is a volatile mix of sporting triumph and institutional turmoil. Under the long tenure of Ricardo Teixeira, who led the organization from 1989 to 2012, the national team secured two FIFA World Cup titles in 1994 and 2002. Teixeira also professionalized the commercial side of the sport, expanding sponsorship deals significantly. However, his era was simultaneously defined by recurring corruption scandals and chaotic domestic league restructuring, which only achieved stability after adopting a round-robin format in 2003.

The post-Teixeira era has been marked by profound instability. Following the 2014 World Cup, where Brazil suffered a historic 7-1 defeat to Germany, the confederation faced a series of leadership crises. Presidents have been arrested, banned by FIFA, or removed due to harassment accusations and document forgery. Despite these administrative upheavals, the CBF remains a financial giant, reporting a 2024 budget of $265.6 million. Today, under president Samir Xaud, the organization continues to manage the national teams and major domestic competitions like the Campeonato Brasileiro and the Copa do Brasil.
