How a colonial pastime became Brazil's most beloved sport
In short: In 1902, football in São Paulo was an elitist pursuit restricted to wealthy clubs. Today, the Campeonato Paulista is a cornerstone of Brazilian culture, born from a fierce class struggle between aristocratic traditions and the rising working class.
The origins of the Campeonato Paulista trace back to December 14, 1901, when Charles Miller, having discovered the sport in England, helped found the Liga Paulista de Foot-Ball (LPF). The first tournament took place between April and October 1902, featuring five initial teams including São Paulo Athletic Club and Germania. In these early years, football was a restricted, elitist endeavor, played by the children of São Paulo's richest families.
A social rift eventually fractured the sport. While the LPF directors fought to keep football exclusive, the popularity of the game began to expand. The arrival of a London amateur team, Corinthians, provided a catalyst; their victory over local sides inspired a group of workers to found Sport Club Corinthians Paulista. This shift toward the masses led to the creation of the APEA, a rival league that promoted the sport across all social classes.
The competition underwent significant structural changes over the decades. Professionalism was officially embraced in 1933 with the creation of the Bandeirante Football League. By 1941, the current governing body, the Federação Paulista de Futebol (FPF), was established. The league's history is also marked by political shifts, such as the 1943 renaming of Palestra Itália to Palmeiras due to wartime laws banning Axis references.
While the tournament's dominance has faced challenges from national competitions since the 1960s, it remains a vital platform for talent. Legends like Pelé, who debuted in 1957 and scored 58 goals in a single season, and the 'Corinthians Democracy' movement of the 1980s, have cemented the league's place in sporting history.
