In short: In 1998, Buffy Summers returned to Sunnydale to face more than just high school exams. Between a sinister mayor's quest for immortality and a rival Slayer's descent into darkness, the season's climax transformed a standard graduation into a battlefield of explosives and ancient demons.

The third season of Buffy the Vampire Slayer, which premiered on September 29, 1998, on The WB, centered on the escalating conflict between Buffy Summers and Mayor Richard Wilkins III. Wilkins, an affable figure who had gained immortality through a Faustian bargain a century ago, sought to complete his ascension into the giant, snake-like demon known as Olvikan. His plan required a massacre of students during the Sunnydale High graduation ceremony.

The season was marked by significant character shifts and external delays. The episodes "Earshot" and "Graduation Day, Part Two" were delayed from their original broadcast schedule due to the content of the episodes following the Columbine High School massacre. During this season, the protagonist's mentor, Rupert Giles, was fired from the Watchers' Council for developing a "father's love" for Buffy, a sentiment she eventually mirrored by refusing to work for the Council herself.

The narrative also introduced Faith, an unstable Slayer activated after the death of Kendra. Faith's arc saw her move from working with Buffy to siding with Mayor Wilkins after accidentally killing a human. The season's climax saw the destruction of the high school via explosives as Buffy lured the Olvikan-form Mayor into the library. This season is frequently cited as the series' best, averaging 5.3 million viewers and maintaining a 100% positive rating from 13 critics on Rotten Tomatoes.

The emotional fallout of the season led to major departures. Angel, tormented by the First Evil and his own guilt, left Sunnydale for Los Angeles, a move that launched his own spin-off series. Similarly, Cordelia left the series to pursue an acting career in L.A.
