How a character designed as a dark reflection became a hero
In short: In the Buffyverse, Faith Lehane was created to be the 'road not taken.' While the protagonist Buffy Summers relied on a support system, Faith lacked a family, leading her to make devastating choices that transformed her from an ally into a villain and, eventually, a redeemed hero.
Introduced in the third season of Buffy the Vampire Slayer, Faith was designed by Joss Whedon as a foil to Buffy Summers. While both characters possessed the supernatural abilities of a Slayer, their environments shaped them differently. Faith, coming from a traumatic and abusive background, lacked the stability of Buffy's friends and family. This isolation drove her toward a villainous path, characterized by a period where she allied with the Mayor of Sunnydale and even attempted to murder the vampire Angel.
The character's descent was marked by a pivotal tragedy in the episode 'Bad Girls,' where Faith accidentally killed Deputy Mayor Allan Finch. This event, coupled with her growing bitterness, led her to betray the 'Scooby Gang.' However, her journey is defined by a complex arc of redemption. Through the help of Angel, who understood her suffering, Faith eventually sought atonement. This process included facing the consequences of her actions, even serving time in prison, and eventually returning to a heroic role.
Beyond her combat skills, the writers used Faith to explore the ethics of power and the identity of a professional killer. Unlike Buffy, Faith initially believed her role as a Slayer relieved her of moral or legal responsibilities. Her later stories, including the 'Angel & Faith' comic series, show her evolving into a mentor for other Slayers. Despite her turbulent past—including a period in a coma and a body-swap with Buffy—she ultimately found a sense of purpose, even as she continued to navigate the complexities of her own identity.
