How a California city transformed from a mental hospital site into a modern hub
In short: Camarillo, California, evolved from a Chumash village and vast ranchos into a suburban city defined by its unique geography and history. Once known for a state mental hospital that inspired songs by Charlie Parker and Fear, the city now hosts a university on those same grounds, balancing growth with its roots.
Long before its incorporation in 1964, the area was home to the Chumash people, who established villages like Kayɨwɨš and Simo'mo. By the 1830s, the Mexican land grant system introduced the Rancho Calleguas, eventually developed by brothers Juan and Adolfo Camarillo. For decades, the region remained largely agricultural, defined by walnut, lemon, and orange groves, with the Camarillo State Mental Hospital serving as the primary employer after its establishment in the 1930s.
The city's trajectory shifted significantly in the mid-1950s with the completion of the Ventura Freeway. This infrastructure project, which required navigating the steep, 2.7-mile Conejo Grade, linked the area to Los Angeles and spurred rapid residential and industrial growth. By 1962, the population reached 7,500, and companies like 3M began establishing major operations. This expansion necessitated a formal city government, which adopted a council-manager structure to oversee development and services.
The legacy of the Camarillo State Mental Hospital remains a cultural touchstone. The facility, which closed in the 1990s, was immortalized in music by artists like Charlie Parker, whose 'Relaxin' at Camarillo' was written during his recovery, and the punk band Fear. Today, the site has been repurposed as California State University Channel Islands, which preserves the original Mission Revival-style bell tower. The city continues to evolve, shifting from a Republican political stronghold in 2000 to a more balanced voter demographic by 2020, while maintaining its identity within the Pleasant Valley.
