In short: In 2004, Canadian MP Carolyn Parrish became a lightning rod for controversy. After a series of provocative remarks regarding the U.S. administration and a satirical television skit, she was expelled from the Liberal caucus. Her journey from a party rebel to the Mayor of Mississauga reveals the high cost of political independence.

Carolyn Parrish's federal career was defined by her refusal to adhere to the traditional tact expected of a Member of Parliament. While serving as a Liberal from 1993 to 2004, she gained national notoriety through several incidents. In February 2003, she was overheard expressing intense frustration toward the Bush administration. By 2004, she had labeled supporters of a missile defence proposal a "coalition of the idiots," a jab at the phrase "coalition of the willing" used by George W. Bush.

The breaking point occurred in November 2004, following a CBC comedy sketch for *This Hour Has 22 Minutes* that featured a doll of the U.S. President. This, combined with Parrish's blunt criticism of Prime Minister Paul Martin's leadership, led to her expulsion from the Liberal caucus. She subsequently sat as an independent, a move that allowed her to speak more freely in the House of Commons without the constraints of the Liberal whip.

Despite her expulsion, Parrish remained a pivotal figure in Canadian politics. In May 2005, her vote proved critical to the survival of Paul Martin's government during a budget vote that was decided by a single vote. After a period in municipal politics, including serving as a Mississauga city councillor, she was elected as the seventh mayor of Mississauga in June 2024. Her mayoralty has been marked by assertive use of strong mayor powers and a focus on housing reform, including cutting development charges in half in 2025.
