The scholar-politician who became Punjab’s first Dalit Sikh Chief Minister
In short: From studying law and political science to leading a state, Charanjit Singh Channi’s trajectory is a study in grassroots ascent. His rise from a municipal councillor to the Chief Minister's office represents a significant moment in Punjab's political history and shifting demographic appeals.
Charanjit Singh Channi’s political journey began far from the state capital, rooted in local administration. He started at the grassroots level as a municipal councillor in Kharar, eventually serving as the president of the Kharar municipal council in 2002. His entry into state-level politics arrived in 2007 when he was elected as an Independent candidate for the Chamkaur Sahib constituency. After joining the Indian National Congress, he successfully retained his seat in the 2012 and 2017 elections, eventually serving as the leader of the opposition from 2015 to 2016.
His ascent to the highest office in Punjab was marked by a historic milestone: in September 2021, he succeeded Captain Amarinder Singh as the 16th Chief Minister of Punjab, becoming the first Dalit Sikh to hold the position. His administration focused on various social and economic initiatives, including the regularization of 'Class D' government jobs, the establishment of academic chairs honoring figures like Dr. B.R. Ambedkar and Guru Ravidass, and the inauguration of the Dastaan-e-Shahadat theme park in November 2021.
Beyond governance, Channi is also a scholar. He holds an MBA from PTU Jalandhar and a PhD in political science from Panjab University, where his research, guided by Professor Emanual Nahar, examined the electoral strategies of the Indian National Congress in Lok Sabha elections since 2004. While his tenure as Chief Minister ended following the 2022 assembly elections, he returned to national prominence in June 2024, winning the Jalandhar Lok Sabha seat with a margin of 175,993 votes.
