From multi-sport high school athlete to UFC flyweight contender
In short: Before entering the octagon, Charles Johnson was a versatile high school standout in Kansas and Missouri. Today, he is a seasoned UFC flyweight competitor known for high-stakes victories and rare submission finishes, proving that elite combat sports success often requires a foundation of diverse athletic excellence.
Born in Topeka, Kansas, on January 10, 1991, Charles Johnson moved to St. Louis, Missouri, at age four. His athletic foundation was built during his high school years, where he demonstrated remarkable versatility. He competed in state championships for American football and was chosen to represent his state in sprinting, long distance running, cross country, and wrestling.
Johnson's professional journey began in 2016, primarily through the Legacy Fighting Alliance (LFA), where he rose to become a champion. His path to the UFC was marked by significant title battles, including an interim flyweight championship win against Yuma Horiuchi via split decision on July 2, 2021. Following the departure of regular champion Victor Altamirano to the UFC, Johnson was recognized as the regular LFA flyweight champion after defeating Juan Camilo by TKO in the second round on August 27, 2021.
Since his UFC debut against Muhammad Mokaev in July 2022, Johnson has become a fixture in the flyweight division, holding a #15 ranking as of October 3, 2026. His career has been defined by both technical striking and unexpected finishes. He has secured multiple performance honors, including a $100,000 Performance of the Night award for his victory over Eduardo Henrique via a rare scottish twister submission in August 2026. His ability to adapt—whether fighting at catchweight due to opponent weight issues or securing split decision victories—has solidified his reputation as a resilient competitor in the UFC's flyweight ranks.
