From Rhodes House to Patagonia: The Strategic Career of Charles R. Conn
In short: Charles R. Conn is a rare bridge between the worlds of high-stakes venture capital and environmental conservation. As a former Rhodes Trust CEO and current Patagonia board member, he has spent decades applying rigorous strategic problem-solving to everything from global scholarship expansion to the protection of wild salmon ecosystems.
Born in 1961, Charles R. Conn has built a career defined by institutional transformation and strategic leadership. After studying at Boston University and Oxford as a Rhodes Scholar, he gained experience at the Boston Consulting Group and McKinsey & Company. His early business career included co-founding Citysearch in 1995, where he managed significant corporate milestones, including the acquisition of Match.com and a public share offering, eventually serving as chairman of Ticketmaster Online-Citysearch in 2001.
Conn’s tenure as the warden and global CEO of the Rhodes Trust from 2013 to 2018 marked a significant shift for the organization. As the first American to hold the post and the first warden without prior Oxford faculty experience, he led a modernization project that raised over £250 million. This capital infusion allowed the Trust to increase the annual number of Rhodes Scholars from 83 to 101, expanding the program into regions including China, the UAE, and various African nations. He also established new partnerships, such as the Atlantic Institute and the Schmidt Science Fellows.
Beyond academia, Conn has maintained a deep commitment to environmental and scientific causes. He served as a senior advisor to the Gordon & Betty Moore Foundation, focusing on wild salmon ecosystem preservation and the Palmyra Atoll research station. His board memberships reflect this dual focus on commerce and conservation, including roles at Patagonia, The Nature Conservancy, and Trout Unlimited. Currently, he continues to operate at the intersection of these fields as a partner at the life sciences venture firm Monograph, while sharing his expertise on strategic problem-solving through his writing and various advisory roles.
