How a casual jam session at a Mexican club became a rock supergroup
In short: Formed in 2008, the hard rock supergroup Chickenfoot emerged from spontaneous jam sessions between Sammy Hagar, Michael Anthony, and Chad Smith at Hagar's Cabo Wabo club. Seeking a guitarist to formalize the project, they recruited Joe Satriani, creating a lineup that critics later ranked among the decade's greatest metal acts.
The band's name originated from a simple observation during early rehearsals: Hagar, Anthony, and Smith noted that a chicken's foot has three talons, matching the trio of founding members. Although initially intended as a placeholder, the moniker stuck after rumors about the group began to circulate. The band’s first public performance occurred in February 2008 at The Pearl Concert Theatre in Las Vegas, where they played a set including covers of Led Zeppelin and Traffic.
Recording sessions for their self-titled debut album took place at Skywalker Sound, leading to a release on June 4, 2009. The group’s momentum was frequently interrupted by the members' other professional obligations, particularly Chad Smith’s commitments to the Red Hot Chili Peppers. This led to a temporary hiatus in late 2009. Despite these scheduling conflicts, the band reconvened to record their second studio album, Chickenfoot III, which was released on September 27, 2011, featuring a unique 3-D album cover.
During the promotional cycle for the second album, Kenny Aronoff stepped in as the drummer for live tours because Smith was occupied with the Red Hot Chili Peppers' own album cycle. By 2014, Hagar and Satriani cited disappointing album sales as a significant barrier to producing a third studio record. Although the band reunited for two shows in May 2016 at Harrah's Showroom in South Lake Tahoe, where they debuted the song Divine Termination, their future has remained uncertain.
As of 2016, Smith expressed that while the members enjoy playing together, their individual schedules make consistent activity difficult. Hagar has since suggested that future recordings depend on the availability of all four musicians, noting that if a full reunion cannot be coordinated, he would prioritize other projects. Despite the lack of a formal breakup, the group remains in a state of flux, defined by the tension between their collaborative chemistry and the reality of their busy, independent careers.
