The vanished middle ground: China's lost third force
In short: In the 1940s, a coalition of intellectuals attempted to carve out a centrist path between the Nationalists and Communists. They sought a unique democracy blending Western political freedom with Soviet economic structures, but political upheaval eventually pushed them into a permanent alliance with the CCP.
Founded on March 19, 1941, in Chongqing, the China Democratic League (CDL) emerged as an umbrella group for several pro-democracy parties and pressure groups. Its primary mission during the Second Sino-Japanese War was to support the national war effort while acting as a 'Third Force' to balance the competing influences of the Kuomintang (KMT) and the Chinese Communist Party (CCP).
The League's political vision was highly specific. In an October 1945 report, the group rejected both left-wing and right-wing extremes, proposing a model that integrated 'Western political democracy' with 'Soviet economic democracy.' They aimed to critique the inequalities of Western capitalism while avoiding the authoritarianism of both the KMT and the CCP, hoping to lead a coalition government under a new constitution.
However, the middle ground proved unstable. By 1947, the KMT-led government outlawed the CDL, labeling it an illegal organization. This repression forced the League to pivot; by January 1948, they publicly announced an alliance with the CCP. Following the 1949 revolution, the CDL transitioned into one of the eight 'democratic parties' that operate under the leadership of the CCP, adhering to the principle of 'long-term coexistence and mutual supervision.'
Today, the CDL remains a significant, though non-oppositional, political entity. As of December 2023, it maintains approximately 356,900 members, primarily consisting of mid-to-senior level intellectuals in science, technology, education, and culture. While it holds seats in the National People's Congress and the CPPCC, its modern constitutional mandate is centered on supporting socialism with Chinese characteristics and national unity.
