Behind the unassuming green door lies Disney's most exclusive and secretive private club
In short: Tucked away in New Orleans Square, Club 33 is a high-priced sanctuary for the elite. Originally conceived by Walt Disney to host corporate sponsors away from the prying eyes of parkgoers, this members-only enclave now spans multiple international parks, requiring tens of thousands of dollars in annual dues for entry.
Club 33 traces its origins to the 1964 New York World's Fair, where Walt Disney observed private VIP lounges used by corporate promoters. Seeking a similar space to entertain guests without the intrusion of the public, he established the first club at 33 Royal Street in Disneyland, which opened in 1967. The venue was designed to be discreet, with an entrance painted in Go Away Green to blend into the surroundings. Following a major renovation that doubled its size, the entrance was relocated to the Court of Angels in July 2014.
The interior is a curated collection of Disney history and high-end design. Guests ascend via an Art Nouveau elevator or staircase to reach dining rooms decorated with hand-painted animation cels from the 1940 film Fantasia. The space features artifacts from Disney productions, including a walnut table from the 1964 film Mary Poppins and an antique telephone booth from the 1967 film The Happiest Millionaire. Walt Disney even intended to integrate Audio-Animatronic technology into the experience, with remnants like a vulture perched on a grandfather clock still present today.
Membership is a significant financial commitment. While initial costs were previously reported at $35,000 with $15,000 in annual dues, current figures as of 2025 indicate an initiation fee of $65,000 and annual dues of $20,625 for individuals. Beyond the cost, members must adhere to a strict code of conduct, including dress codes and limitations on photography. Today, the concept has expanded far beyond California, with locations at Tokyo Disneyland, Shanghai Disneyland, and all four parks at Walt Disney World Resort, including the Spotlight Lounge and Harambe House.
