From Major League Baseball diamonds to the iconic world of Backyard Baseball
In short: Cole Tucker spent over a decade navigating the professional baseball circuit, from a first-round draft pick to a journeyman across multiple major league organizations. Yet, his connection to the sport extends beyond the field, recently culminating in a voice-acting role for a beloved childhood video game franchise.
Born in 1996, Cole Bryson Tucker emerged as a standout talent in Phoenix, Arizona, before the Pittsburgh Pirates selected him 24th overall in the 2014 MLB draft. His professional journey was defined by versatility and movement. After debuting for the Pirates in 2019 with a memorable game-winning home run against the San Francisco Giants, Tucker spent subsequent years transitioning between shortstop, second base, and the outfield. His career path saw him navigate various organizations, including stints with the Colorado Rockies and the Los Angeles Angels, before he officially announced his retirement from professional baseball on May 20, 2025.
Beyond his professional statistics, Tucker maintained a deep personal affinity for the Backyard Baseball video game series, a nostalgic staple for many baseball fans. This lifelong interest evolved into a professional collaboration when it was announced in June 2026 that he would provide the voice for the character Ricky Johnson in the series' reboot. This transition highlights a unique intersection between a professional athlete's career and the cultural touchstones that shaped his early passion for the game.
Tucker's life outside the diamond has also garnered significant public interest. He married actress Vanessa Hudgens in December 2023 in Tulum, Mexico, and the couple has since expanded their family. His athletic lineage is shared with his brother, Carson, who was also a first-round draft selection in 2020. By blending his high-level playing experience with his genuine enthusiasm for gaming culture, Tucker has carved out a post-retirement path that remains deeply rooted in the sport he played for over a decade.
