In short: Before dominating the diamond for the Atlanta Braves, Austin Riley was a standout high school pitcher and shortstop. After bypassing college to sign a $1.6 million deal, he transformed from a top prospect into a World Series champion and a record-breaking cornerstone of the Braves' lineup.

Austin Riley's ascent to Major League Baseball was marked by a pivotal decision in 2015. Despite being committed to play baseball for Mississippi State University—where he also faced offers to play football as a punter—Riley opted to forgo his college career. He signed with the Atlanta Braves for $1.6 million, entering the professional ranks with the Gulf Coast Braves.

His rise through the Braves' farm system was rapid. By 2019, Riley made his MLB debut, making an immediate impact by hitting a home run in his second at-bat. He became the fourth player in MLB history to hit eight home runs in his first 16 games, a feat that also made him the fastest player in Braves history to achieve it. This early momentum earned him the NL Rookie of the Month award for May 2019.

Riley's career reached a new echelon in 2021. After refining his mental approach to recognize off-speed pitches, he helped drive the Braves toward a World Series title. By doing so, he became the sole Atlanta third baseman alongside Eddie Mathews and Chipper Jones to achieve a .300 average, 30 homers, and 100 RBIs before turning 25. His dominance led to a franchise-record ten-year, $212 million contract extension in 2022.

Despite facing significant injury setbacks—including a right knee sprain in 2019, a hand fracture in 2024, and abdominal surgery in 2025—Riley has remained a central figure for Atlanta. His ability to produce high-level statistics, such as his 2021 Silver Slugger Award and multiple All-Star appearances, underscores his status as a premier talent in the National League.
