In short: After eleven years on TBS, Conan O'Brien ended his late-night tenure by dismantling the genre's rigid conventions. From a traditional hour-long broadcast to a stripped-down, desk-less half-hour, the show evolved into an intimate experiment that prioritized digital engagement and creative freedom over the fading metrics of linear television.

When Conan premiered on November 8, 2010, it initially adhered to the established six-piece late-night format popularized by hosts like Johnny Carson and David Letterman. Filmed at Warner Bros. Studios in Burbank, the show featured a desk, a band, and a monologue. However, O'Brien and his team soon sought to reclaim the quirkier, edgier style of his earlier NBC work, intentionally avoiding the constraints of a broad, mass-market appeal. By 2019, the show underwent a radical transformation, cutting its runtime to 30 minutes and removing the desk entirely. O'Brien famously remarked that sitting behind a desk began to feel like doing taxes, opting instead for a more relaxed arrangement of armchairs.

The show's trajectory mirrored the broader decline of linear television. Despite a strong premiere with 4.1 million viewers, ratings steadily dropped, falling to an average of 282,000 viewers by the 2020–21 season. Yet, while traditional viewership waned, the show found a second life online. The Team Coco website and digital platforms became a powerhouse for the brand, with online videos attracting 3.4 billion views by 2018. TBS leveraged this young, digitally savvy audience for lucrative advertising, even as the show's live ratings struggled against the rise of cord-cutting and streaming.

The final phase of the show was defined by adaptability. During the COVID-19 pandemic, production moved from O'Brien's home to the Coronet Theatre, and eventually to the Largo. This period highlighted the show's departure from its original, high-production roots. When the series concluded on June 24, 2021, it marked the end of an era for O'Brien, who transitioned from the nightly grind of late-night television to a new variety format on HBO Max, leaving behind a legacy of experimentation that challenged what a talk show could be.
