From YouTube vlogger to pop prince: the meteoric rise of Conan Gray
In short: He began by uploading baking videos and vlogs from small-town Texas. Today, Conan Gray is a global pop force. Discover how a teenager's digital diary transformed into chart-topping albums, international tours, and a connection to the industry's biggest icons.
Conan Gray’s journey from a YouTuber in Georgetown, Texas, to a major recording artist is marked by rapid, high-stakes transitions. After signing with Republic Records in 2018, Gray famously dropped out of UCLA just three months after arriving in Los Angeles to pursue touring. His early digital presence, which garnered over 25 million views, laid the foundation for a career defined by 'Americana-related nostalgia' and raw, personal storytelling.
His breakthrough arrived with the 2020 album Kid Krow, which became the largest U.S. artist debut of its year, peaking at number five on the Billboard 200. This success was driven by hits like 'Maniac' and the TikTok-fueled sensation 'Heather,' the latter of which reached the top 40 in the UK, Australia, and Ireland. Gray has since expanded his discography with Superache (2022) and Found Heaven (2024), even achieving significant chart success in the Netherlands and South Korea.
Beyond the charts, Gray’s artistry is deeply intertwined with his personal history and influences. He cites Taylor Swift as his primary songwriting icon, noting that her music shaped him since he was nine years old. His work often explores themes of identity and emotion, ranging from the 80s-inspired sounds of his recent singles to the 'miserable' and 'accurate' depictions of life found in Superache. Now operating under his own label, GirlyBoy, Inc., Gray continues to evolve, moving from bedroom-pop roots toward a more expansive, cinematic pop sound.
