In short: Long known as Queen's County, the landscape of Laois holds the scars of failed plantations, Norman invasions, and ancient rituals. From Bronze Age golden objects to the 16th-century attempt to dispossende the O'Moore clan, discover the complex layers of this landlocked territory.

The history of Laois is a palimpsest of shifting powers. Long before the English crown established Queen's County in 1556, the region was a mosaic of medieval kingdoms. The western portion was part of the Kingdom of Ossory, while the east was governed by the Seven Septs of Loígis. These dynastic rulers, including the Ua/Ó Mórdha, claimed a prestigious lineage descending from the legendary Red Branch Knights.

The 16th century brought a period of intense colonial experimentation. In 1556, Thomas Radclyffe, the 3rd Earl of Sussex, attempted a plantation to dispossess the O'Moore clan and settle the area with English colonists. Historians largely view this first attempt as a failure; the cost of maintaining garrisons and suppressing guerrilla warfare far outweighed the economic yields, leaving only small, isolated communities.

A second, more successful plantation followed the Nine Years' War, eventually bringing diverse groups to the region. By 1659, Quakers led by William Edmundson had settled in Mountmellick, and by 1696, Huguenots found refuge in Portarlington. This era of settlement eventually gave way to the modern identity of Laois, which reclaimed its Irish name following the War of Independence in 1922.

Beneath these political shifts lies an even deeper antiquity. The land has been inhabited since hunters and gatherers passed through roughly 8,500 years ago. By the Bronze Age, around 2000 BC, the region saw complex social rituals, evidenced by the remains of 'Cashel Man,' suggesting that ritual killing was part of the landscape's ancient fabric.
