From NHL enforcer to Stanley Cup champion coach: the career of Craig Berube
In short: Known as Chief, Craig Berube spent 17 seasons as a rugged NHL enforcer before transitioning to a successful coaching career. He famously led the St. Louis Blues to their first Stanley Cup title in 2019, cementing a legacy that spans from the penalty box to the bench of major franchises.
Born in 1965, Craig Berube carved out a long playing career defined by physical intensity. Between 1986 and 2003, he appeared in 1,054 regular-season games for five different organizations, including the Philadelphia Flyers and the Washington Capitals. His role was primarily that of an enforcer, a position that saw him accumulate 3,149 penalty minutes—the seventh-highest total in league history. Despite his longevity, he holds the record for the lowest point total among players who reached the 1,000-game milestone.
Berube’s transition to coaching began in the American Hockey League before he moved to the NHL. His breakthrough came as the interim coach for the St. Louis Blues during the 2018–19 season. After a difficult start left the team at the bottom of the standings, Berube orchestrated a dramatic turnaround, leading the club to a franchise-record 11-game winning streak. This momentum carried the team to the Stanley Cup Final, where they defeated the Boston Bruins in seven games to secure the franchise's first championship.
Beyond his tactical contributions, Berube is notable for his heritage as a person of Métis and Cree descent. In 2013, he and Ted Nolan made history as the first Indigenous head coaches to face each other in an NHL game. His coaching journey has been marked by both high-profile successes and abrupt departures, including his tenure with the Toronto Maple Leafs, where he led the team to an Atlantic Division title in 2025 before his dismissal in 2026.
