From late-round draft pick to NHL head coach
In short: Ryan Craig’s journey to the NHL bench is a masterclass in professional persistence. Drafted 255th overall, he navigated a decade of minor league leadership and multiple team affiliations before reaching the pinnacle of coaching. His path reveals how longevity and captaincy can build a foundation for elite leadership.
Ryan Craig's professional trajectory began with a modest start. Drafted 255th overall by the Tampa Bay Lightning in 2002, he spent his first seven professional seasons within that organization. Despite his potential, the road to a consistent NHL role was long, leading him to sign with the Pittsburgh Penguins in 2010 and later the Columbus Blue Jackets in 2013.
A defining characteristic of Craig's career is his role as a leader. He frequently served as a captain, notably leading the Brandon Wheat Kings in the WHL during his final seasons, where he ranked sixth in goals and led the league in game-winning goals. He continued this trend in the AHL, captaining the Wilkes-Barre Scranton Penguins and later leading the Lake Erie Monsters to their first Calder Cup championship in 2015–16.
Craig transitioned to the bench on June 9, 2017, joining the Vegas Golden Knights as an assistant coach just as he retired from playing. He served under three different head coaches—Gerard Gallant, Peter DeBoer, and Bruce Cassidy—winning a Stanley Cup in 2023. His steady ascent culminated on June 17, 2026, when he was named the head coach of the Golden Knights, successfully leading them to a 5–2 victory over the Chicago Blackhawks in his debut.
His career illustrates the importance of the 'grind' in professional sports. By moving between organizations like the Springfield Falcons and the Henderson Silver Knights, Craig built a diverse resume of leadership and tactical knowledge. This extensive experience across various levels of the hockey pyramid provided the necessary depth to eventually helm a championship-winning NHL franchise.
