The demographic anomaly of a nation aging like Europe while developing like the Caribbean
In short: Cuba is currently experiencing a profound demographic shift. With fertility rates at historic lows and mass emigration accelerating, the island is developing a population profile typically seen only in high-income Western nations, creating a unique and structurally anomalous social reality.
Cuba’s demographic landscape is defined by a sustained decline. By the end of 2024, the resident population was approximately 9.7 million, according to preliminary ONEI figures. This contraction is driven by a 'negative natural increase'—where deaths have consistently outpaced births since 2020—and unprecedented levels of emigration. In 2024, live births fell to 71,358, the lowest number in 65 years, while deaths reached 128,098, creating a natural decrease of 56,740 people.
The island's age structure is remarkably advanced. The median age has climbed to roughly 42.5 years in the 2025–2026 period, surpassing the median ages of both the United States and Canada. This puts Cuba in a demographic category comparable to France. This aging is a byproduct of long-term trends: the fertility rate has remained below the replacement level of 2.1 since 1977 or 1978, and the country implemented widespread access to contraception and abortion by 1965.
A significant driver of this shift is the 'feminization' of recent migration. Since 2021, a high proportion of those leaving the island have been women, with estimates suggesting roughly 57% of recent emigrants are female. This has led to a notable depletion of women in childbearing ages; ONEI reported that the number of women aged 15–49 decreased by 304,717 by the end of 2023. This massive outflow of working-age adults further complicates an economy already facing severe structural challenges.
