How a band named after a Queen quote conquered the American pop charts
In short: Formed in London in 1985, Cutting Crew achieved international fame with their debut single, (I Just) Died in Your Arms. Despite a Grammy nomination and a number one hit in the United States, the group faced significant management disputes and lineup changes that stalled their momentum during the 1990s.
The band originated from a chance meeting between lead vocalist Nick Van Eede and guitarist Kevin MacMichael. Van Eede, who had previously found success in Canada with the band the Drivers, was so impressed by MacMichael's guitar work during a tour that he invited him to London. The name Cutting Crew was inspired by a comment from the band Queen, who once described themselves as a cutting crew because they were focused on recording in the studio rather than touring.
The success of (I Just) Died in Your Arms was a multiformat phenomenon, charting on mainstream rock, adult contemporary, and dance club playlists. Despite this strong start, the band struggled to maintain consistency. A follow-up single, One for the Mockingbird, performed poorly, and while I've Been in Love Before eventually reached the US Top 10, internal management conflicts led to a prolonged recording hiatus.
The band's trajectory shifted significantly in the 1990s. Following the release of their album Compus Mentus, the group disbanded in 1993. Kevin MacMichael later collaborated with Robert Plant before passing away from lung cancer in 2002 at the age of 51. Nick Van Eede eventually revived the Cutting Crew name in the 2000s, transitioning from a collaborative unit to a project centered on his own creative direction. In 2020, the band released Ransomed Healed Restored Forgiven, a compilation featuring orchestral reworkings of their classic material, marking a new chapter for the group decades after their initial breakthrough.
