In short: The Dallas Cowboys were born from a bitter grudge. When an NFL owner blocked a new franchise in Texas, the prospective owner bought the rights to the rival team's fight song, silencing it until he got his way. This petty act of leverage launched one of sports' most valuable empires.

The path to the Cowboys' existence was paved with corporate sabotage. In 1958, oilman Clint Murchison Jr. attempted to purchase the Washington Redskins to relocate them to Dallas. When the deal collapsed due to a last-minute change in terms by Redskins owner George Preston Marshall, Murchison was left without a team. Because NFL expansion required unanimous owner approval, Marshall held the power to block Murchison indefinitely.

Murchison found his opening through a personal rift between Marshall and his band leader, Barnee Breeskin. Breeskin, who had composed the music for the Redskins' fight song, was eager to spite Marshall. In 1959, Murchison purchased the rights to the song for $2,500. He then revealed his ownership to Marshall, forbidding the team from playing the anthem during games. Faced with a stadium of silent fans, Marshall eventually relented, trading his crucial vote for the return of his song.

Once established, the franchise underwent a remarkable transformation. Under the leadership of Tex Schramm, Gil Brandt, and Tom Landry, the team became a dominant force. During the 1970s, the Cowboys secured more regular-season victories than any other NFL franchise. Their success culminated in multiple Super Bowl appearances, cementing their status as a cultural phenomenon dubbed 'America's Team.'

Today, the Cowboys represent a massive financial juggernaut. In 2015, they became the first sports team valued at $4 billion, and by late 2025, that valuation reached approximately $13 billion. From a spite-fueled expansion bid to a global brand, the organization's history reflects a unique blend of high-stakes business maneuvering and sustained athletic excellence.
