In short: Before mixed martial arts became a global phenomenon, Dan 'The Beast' Severn was rewriting the rules. A world-class wrestler who bridged the gap between professional wrestling and the UFC, he achieved a feat of dominance that remains nearly unparalleled in combat sports history.

Dan Severn, nicknamed "the Beast," emerged as a pivotal figure in the early years of the Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC). As the first true world-class wrestler to enter the Octagon, his presence foreshadowed an era of dominance by elite grapplers. His technical prowess was evident early on; during his first UFC appearance at UFC 4, he famously executed two back suplexes on Anthony Macias.

Severn's career is defined by unprecedented versatility and championship success. He became the first UFC Triple Crown champion, securing titles at UFC 5, the Ultimate Ultimate 1995, and the UFC Superfight Championship. Remarkably, he was the first athlete to compete in both the UFC and the World Wrestling Federation (WWF) simultaneously, even holding the NWA and UFC championships at the same time.

However, his career was not without controversy. In 1996, his fight against Mitsuhiro Matsunaga was criticized by fans and fighters as a "work," or a scripted professional wrestling match, due to his use of pro-wrestling style body slams and a rare reverse armbar. Similarly, his 1997 bout against Kimo Leopoldo at Pride FC's inaugural event in Tokyo drew ire from Japanese fans after both fighters spent 29 of the 30 minutes throwing only light strikes, leading to Severn never being invited back to the promotion.

Beyond the cage, Severn's legacy includes a professional MMA record of 101–19–7 and induction into the UFC Hall of Fame. He has also served as a mentor to notable champions like Rashad Evans and Quinton "Rampage" Jackson, cementing his influence on the evolution of modern combat sports.
