The £5.5 million transfer that a striker later called a mistake
In short: Following two years in the top division, Dave Kitson joined Stoke City in 2008 for a record £5.5 million fee. Years later, the former professional footballer would admit he made the wrong decision, describing the move as a mistake that cost him his happiness.
Dave Kitson's career trajectory is marked by high-stakes transfers and profound personal reflections. After a prolific stint at Cambridge United, where he scored 47 goals in 123 appearances, he joined Reading in 2003 for £150,000. He became a key part of the Reading side that secured promotion to the Premier League in 2006, achieving a record 106 points in the Championship.
Kitson struggled to adapt to manager Tony Pulis's tactical setup, often being played out of position. This led to a goal drought in the 2008–09 season, where he failed to score in 18 competitive appearances. Kitson later admitted that he 'threw all of that away' by leaving the happiness he found at Reading for a challenge that did not suit him.
Beyond the pitch, Kitson's career has been punctuated by controversy and personal struggle. In 2018, his comments regarding racist abuse directed at Raheem Sterling drew significant criticism, including a protest by player Tyrone Mings. He has also been open about the toll his career took on his well-being, admitting that he still requires significant medication to manage his daily life.
Kitson officially retired from professional football in July 2014. Since then, his career has transitioned into coaching and management, including a brief, unmaterialized plan to manage the Nauru national team in 2024 and an appointment as manager of Maidenhead United Women in June 2025.
