From Morning Radio DJ to the Voice of Gaming's Most Iconic Characters
In short: Before he became the voice behind Lee Everett in The Walking Dead or Lucius Fox in the Batman: Arkham series, Dave Fennoy was a radio DJ in San Francisco. His path to becoming a prolific voice actor was defined by early setbacks, strategic pivots, and a move to Los Angeles.
Dave Fennoy's journey into voice acting began while he was working as a morning DJ at the San Francisco radio station KSOL. His initial foray into the industry was marked by a quick, early success booking a California Lottery commercial, followed by a period where his career stalled. This lull prompted him to pursue professional voiceover training to refine his craft. In 1989, he was offered a chance to join a Los Angeles agency by Leigh Gilbert, but he initially declined the opportunity to remain in his radio role.
The trajectory of his career shifted in February 1990 when he was fired from KSOL. This event served as the catalyst for his relocation to Los Angeles, where he began building a diverse portfolio spanning commercials, television promos, and animation. His early work included voicing RoboCop for a telephonic game and landing his first animated series role as Dick Scott in New Kids on the Block in 1990. By 1991, he was voicing Bo Jackson in the series ProStars, and in 2008, he became the recognizable voice behind Hulu's commercial interruption intros.
Fennoy's background is rooted in performance, having started as a child actor at the Karamu House in Cleveland, Ohio. He later pursued theater at Macalester College before leaving to tour as a professional musician. He eventually completed his formal education at Howard University, earning a degree in jazz studies with a minor in guitar. This musical and theatrical foundation informs his extensive work in video games, where he has portrayed characters such as Bluebeard in The Wolf Among Us, Rodin in Bayonetta, and Satan in Afterparty, cementing his status as a versatile voice in modern gaming.
