Beyond the high kicks: David Lee Roth’s surprising life as an emergency medical technician
In short: Known as Diamond Dave, the legendary Van Halen frontman defined the wild, booze-fueled rock star archetype of the 1980s. Yet, behind the stage persona lay a disciplined, multifaceted individual who navigated complex business dealings, pursued eclectic solo projects, and even spent years working as a certified emergency medical technician in New York.
Born in 1954 to an ophthalmologist and a teacher, David Lee Roth’s upbringing was rooted in a Midwest work ethic rather than the excesses of Hollywood. Before finding fame, he worked as a hospital orderly, a background that perhaps informed his later, lesser-known career in emergency medicine. In the late 1990s, Roth trained as an EMT in New York City, completing over 200 ambulance rides. This practical, life-saving work stood in stark contrast to his public image as the high-kicking, Capezio-wearing lead singer of Van Halen, a band he helped name and lead to global success.
Roth’s tenure with Van Halen, spanning from 1974 to 1985, was marked by both immense commercial triumph and internal friction. While he was the face of the band’s 'booze-and-babes' image, he was also the de facto chairman of their business and marketing decisions. Creative differences with guitarist Eddie Van Halen—specifically regarding the band's musical direction—eventually led to his departure in 1985. Despite the split, Roth maintained a prolific solo career, releasing albums like 'Eat 'Em and Smile' and 'Skyscraper', which showcased his interest in diverse genres ranging from jazz to calypso.
The relationship between Roth and his former bandmates remained a subject of public fascination and occasional tension for decades. After a brief 1996 reunion, he officially returned to Van Halen in 2006. The subsequent 2007–2008 tour became the highest-grossing in the band's history, earning over $93 million. Following the release of their final studio album, 'A Different Kind of Truth', in 2012, the band continued until Eddie Van Halen’s death in 2020. Today, Roth remains an enigmatic figure, having balanced the extremes of rock stardom with a genuine, if unconventional, commitment to diverse professional pursuits.
