In short: Formed in 1972, Van Halen redefined hard rock through Eddie Van Halen's technical mastery and David Lee Roth's magnetic stage presence. Despite internal fractures and shifting lineups, the group achieved massive commercial success, selling over 80 million albums worldwide and cementing their status as a definitive American rock institution.

The band's origins trace back to the brothers Alex and Eddie Van Halen, who moved from the Netherlands to Pasadena in 1962. Initially, Eddie played drums while Alex handled guitar, but they eventually swapped roles, setting the stage for their future sound. By 1972, they formed a group that would eventually adopt the name Van Halen, recruiting vocalist David Lee Roth and bassist Michael Anthony. Their rise was fueled by relentless self-promotion, including passing out flyers at local schools and playing backyard parties, which eventually led to a residency at the Sunset Strip club Gazzarri's.

Their breakthrough came in 1977 when Warner Bros. executives witnessed their performance at the Starwood in Hollywood. The resulting debut album, released in 1978, became a landmark in rock history, eventually earning Diamond certification for exceeding 10 million units moved in the United States. The band's trajectory was marked by a unique tension between Eddie's complex, often darker musical ambitions and the pop-oriented sensibilities of his collaborators. This creative friction defined their output, from the synthesizer-heavy success of 1984—their only album to produce a number-one Billboard Hot 100 single—to the multi-platinum era with Sammy Hagar, who joined in 1985.

The band's history was defined by frequent personnel changes and interpersonal conflict. After Hagar's departure in 1996, the group briefly reunited with Roth before hiring Gary Cherone for the experimental Van Halen III. Throughout these shifts, the band maintained a massive footprint, holding the record for the most number-one hits on Billboard's Mainstream Rock chart. Following Eddie Van Halen's death in 2020, his son Wolfgang confirmed the group had officially disbanded, ending a decades-long run that saw them become one of the top 20 best-selling artists in the United States.
