In short: David McCormack spent decades as a fixture of the Brisbane indie rock scene, fronting the band Custard. Yet, he achieved global recognition not through his guitar, but as the voice of Bandit Heeler in the hit series Bluey. He records his lines remotely, without seeing the animation or hearing other actors.

Born in 1968, David McCormack began his musical journey in 1986 with the Brisbane-based group Who's Gerald? before co-founding the band Custard in 1989. Throughout the 1990s, Custard became a prolific force in the Australian music scene, releasing five studio albums including Wisenheimer and Loverama. McCormack’s creative output during this period was immense; he moonlighted in various side projects such as the country-western outfit COW, the electronic duo Computor, and the band Miami, while also collaborating with Robert Forster of The Go-Betweens.

Following Custard's initial dissolution, McCormack continued to explore diverse musical avenues. He formed The Titanics in 2000, released solo electronic work like The Matterhorn in 2002, and fronted David McCormack and The Polaroids. His career eventually expanded into television and film composition, with scores for projects like Rake and The Tall Man. This background in sound and performance set the stage for his transition into voice acting, a role he initially expected to be minor.

In 2018, McCormack began voicing Bandit Heeler, the father in the animated series Bluey. His approach to the character is notably unadorned; he does not modify his natural voice or view the animation while recording his lines in Sydney. This performance has resonated globally, contributing to the show's Peabody Award-winning success. Beyond Bluey, McCormack has continued to diversify his portfolio, voicing characters in Adventure Time: Fionna and Cake and narrating children's audiobooks, proving that his creative range extends far beyond his origins in the Brisbane rock circuit.
