How David Zaslav transformed from a cable executive into a polarizing media titan
In short: David Zaslav rose from a legal career to lead Discovery and later Warner Bros. Discovery, orchestrating massive mergers and streaming shifts. Yet, his tenure has been marked by both strategic expansion and intense backlash over cancelled projects, cost-cutting measures, and the removal of content from digital platforms.
Born in 1960 in Brooklyn, David Zaslav began his career as an attorney before joining NBC in 1989. He played a pivotal role in launching cable staples like CNBC and MSNBC. In 2006, he became CEO of Discovery Communications, where he steered the company toward a content-focused strategy, eventually taking it public in 2008 and acquiring Scripps Networks Interactive for $14.6 billion in 2018.
Zaslav’s leadership reached a new scale with the $43 billion merger of Discovery and WarnerMedia in 2022. As CEO of the combined Warner Bros. Discovery, he launched the streaming service Max. However, his tenure faced significant controversy starting in August 2022, when he began cancelling projects like Batgirl and Coyote vs. Acme for tax write-offs. This move, alongside the removal of numerous titles from streaming libraries, led to criticism that he was creating 'lost media' and contributed to a nearly $25 billion decline in the company's market cap.
The executive's influence extended to news and labor relations. He oversaw leadership changes at CNN, appointing Chris Licht and later Mark Thompson. During the 2023 Hollywood strikes, he navigated tensions that WBD estimated cost the company between $300 million and $500 million. By 2026, the company's trajectory shifted again when shareholders approved a $110 billion acquisition by Paramount Skydance, set to close in October 2026, though they notably rejected a golden parachute for Zaslav.
Beyond business, Zaslav has been recognized with various honors, including the Steven J. Ross Humanitarian Award and induction into the Cable Hall of Fame. Despite his professional accolades and inclusion in Time's 100 Most Influential People in 2022, his tenure remains a subject of intense debate regarding the balance between corporate profitability and the preservation of creative content.
