In short: Before he was a fixture of prestige television dramas like Oz and Dexter, David Zayas spent nearly fifteen years patrolling the streets of New York. His lived experience as a police officer provided a unique foundation for a prolific career playing both the law and those who break it.

Having spent his childhood in The Bronx after being born in Ponce, Puerto Rico, David Zayas moved from civil service into acting. Zayas spent nearly 15 years working as an NYPD officer following his enlistment in the US Air Force at 19. This period of law enforcement provided a reservoir of authenticity that would define much of his early acting work.

Zayas's ability to inhabit complex roles often saw him cast in roles that mirrored his professional past, such as an NYPD officer in the 2007 film Michael Clayton and a corrupt officer in 16 Blocks (2006). However, he frequently subverted these expectations by portraying figures on the opposite side of the law, most notably as the inmate Enrique Morales in the HBO prison drama Oz.

His versatility extends to crime bosses and even more lighthearted roles. He portrayed the mob boss Sal Maroni in the Fox series Gotham, which debuted on September 22, 2014, and played a gregarious bodega owner in the film Annie (2014). Beyond crime dramas, he has been a mainstay of the LAByrinth Theater Company since 1992, a traveling group based in New York City, where he also met his wife, actress Liza Colón.

Throughout his career, Zayas has remained a significant presence in television, appearing in long-running series such as Dexter, where he played Angel Batista for all eight seasons and the spinoff Dexter: Resurrection. His filmography also includes roles in Sylvester Stallone's The Expendables (2010) and the modern Romeo and Juliet retelling, RJ (2021).
