How Def Leppard survived tragedy to define the sound of eighties pop-metal
In short: Formed in Sheffield in 1976, Def Leppard became global icons by blending heavy metal with pop sensibilities. Their journey was marked by massive commercial success, a pioneering electronic drum kit for their one-armed drummer, and a resilience that saw them through the tragic loss of a founding guitarist.
Emerging from the new wave of British heavy metal, Def Leppard initially struggled to find their footing. Their 1980 debut, On Through the Night, faced backlash from fans who felt the band was chasing American success. However, under the meticulous production of Mutt Lange, they refined a melodic hard rock sound that resonated globally. By the time they released Pyromania in 1983, they had secured their place as household names, with hits like Photograph and Rock of Ages dominating MTV and rock radio.
The band’s trajectory was nearly derailed in 1984 when drummer Rick Allen lost his left arm in a car accident. Rather than replacing him, the band supported his recovery as he worked with Simmons to develop a custom electronic drum kit. Allen’s return to the stage in 1986 became a defining moment of triumph. This resilience fueled the 1987 release of Hysteria, a pop-oriented masterpiece that spent over two years on the charts and sold more than 15 million copies worldwide, spawning seven hit singles.
The band faced further adversity in 1991 with the death of guitarist Steve Clark. They persevered, recording the 1992 album Adrenalize as a four-piece before recruiting Vivian Campbell. Despite the shifting musical landscape of the 1990s, including the rise of grunge, Def Leppard maintained their legacy through constant touring and a 2019 induction into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. With over 100 million records sold, they remain among the most successful rock acts in history.
