Romania: An island of Latinity in a Slavic and Hungarian sea
In short: Imagine an Eastern European nation where the primary language is descended from ancient Rome, yet it is surrounded by Slavic and Hungarian neighbors. Romania stands as a unique linguistic anomaly—a cultural outpost of Latinity that has shaped its identity through centuries of migration, war, and shifting borders.
The Romanian people are the most numerous speakers of an Eastern Romance language today. Their native tongue, Romanian, evolved from Vulgar Latin and integrated various borrowings from Slavic, French, Turkish, German, Hungarian, Greek, and Italian sources. This linguistic heritage creates a distinct cultural profile for Romania, often described as an 'island of Latinity' situated within the broader geographic context of Eastern Europe.
The country's demographic makeup is characterized by a significant ethnic Romanian majority (89.3% as of 2021) and several prominent minorities. The Hungarian minority is the largest, making up about 6.0% of the population. Other notable groups include the Roma, who are estimated to represent between 5% and 11% of the population despite lower official census figures, and Ukrainians, primarily settled in northern regions like Maramureș County.
Romania's demographic history is marked by dramatic shifts. Before World War II, minorities accounted for over 28% of the total population; this figure was halved during the war due to border changes and the loss of territories like Bessarabia and southern Dobrudja. Additionally, the ethnic German population saw a massive decline from an estimated 786,000 in 1939 to roughly 36,000 by 2011, driven by post-war deportations and significant migration to Germany after the 1989 Revolution.
Today, Romania faces a steady population decline, dropping from 23.2 million in 1990 to approximately 19.1 million in 2021. This trend is attributed to high mortality rates, low fertility (1.71 children per woman in 2017), and substantial emigration. While the country remains one of Europe's least urbanized nations—with only about 54.7% of people living in cities—it continues to navigate these complex demographic pressures.
