How a Brooklyn Rapper Became Defined by a Single Viral Hit
In short: Sidney Royel Selby III, known as Desiigner, exploded onto the scene with his 2015 debut single Panda. Despite securing a major label deal with Kanye West and landing multiple top-40 hits, the rapper remains frequently labeled a one-hit wonder. His career trajectory reveals the volatile nature of modern viral fame.
Born in Brooklyn in 1997, Selby began his musical journey in school choirs and church before adopting the moniker Desiigner. His rapid ascent was fueled by the viral success of Panda, which topped the Billboard Hot 100 and led to a contract with GOOD Music in February 2016. This momentum saw him featured on Kanye West's The Life of Pablo and included in the 2016 XXL Freshmen Class. Yet, despite subsequent tracks like Tiimmy Turner reaching the top 40, the industry and public perception have struggled to move past his initial breakthrough.
The rapper's tenure at GOOD Music ended in 2019, a departure he later attributed to personal mental health struggles and a lack of support during his father's illness. His career has since been marked by both independent releases and significant legal turbulence, including arrests for domestic violence in 2026 and an incident of indecent exposure on a flight in 2023. These events have often overshadowed his musical output, which draws heavily from the trap music traditions of Atlanta.
Critics and listeners have frequently compared Desiigner's vocal style to that of Future, a comparison he has addressed with public grace. While his commercial peak occurred early, his career serves as a case study in the pressures of the digital music era. From his initial viral explosion to his later independent projects, Desiigner remains an active, if controversial, figure in the rap landscape, navigating a path that defies simple categorization.
