In short: When BBC One premiered Doctor Foster in 2015, audiences saw a gripping marriage drama. But beneath the surface of this British thriller lies a profound connection to the myth of Medea, reimagining ancient vengeance through the lens of modern betrayal and domestic suspicion.

Created by Mike Bartlett, the series follows Dr. Gemma Foster, a 3/7-year-old general practitioner in the fictional town of Parminster. The narrative tension is driven by her growing suspicion that her husband, the property developer Simon, is engaged in an affair. The show's brilliance lies in its structural use of classical mythology; the characters are intentionally analogous to figures from the Medea myth. Gemma herself embodies Medea, while Simon serves as the Jason figure. Other characters mirror the myth's wider cast, such as the student Kate Parks representing Glauce and Chris Parks acting as King Creon.

The show's impact was both critical and global. While some critics, like The Guardian's Lucy Mangan, praised it as a "gripping portrait of a marriage slowly being poisoned," others were more skeptical. The Telegraph's Catherine Blythe criticized the plot's lack of emotional logic, suggesting the drama occasionally relied on "melodramatic contortions." Despite these critiques, the series achieved significant international reach, premiering in countries ranging from Australia and New Zealand to South Korea, where its influence was so great that local adaptations like The World of the Married became massive hits.

After the second series concluded in October 2017, the future of the show remained uncertain for years due to scheduling conflicts. However, the long wait ended on 25 February 2026, when it was officially confirmed that a third and final series would return to conclude Gemma Foster's story. This revival promises to settle the tensions established in the original run, which featured a complex web of characters including Gemma's son, Tom, and her patient, Carly Williams.
