In short: Founded in 1980 to distribute television systems, EchoStar evolved into a telecommunications giant through satellite innovation and aggressive acquisitions. Yet, despite reaching the Fortune 500, the company recently faced a cascade of debt, regulatory scrutiny, and bankruptcy filings, forcing a dramatic restructuring of its wireless and satellite assets.

EchoStar began as a distributor of C-band TV systems under chairman Charles Ergen. By 1992, the firm secured a critical orbital slot from the Federal Communications Commission, leading to the 1995 launch of its first satellite, EchoStar I. The following year, the company established the Dish Network brand, which would become central to its identity for decades. The business underwent a complex evolution, spinning off Dish Network in 2008 before reuniting with it in 2023 to consolidate its technology and infrastructure.

The company's recent history is defined by intense financial pressure and shifting strategic priorities. In 2024, EchoStar ranked 242nd on the Fortune 500, but by 2025, it faced an FCC probe regarding 5G deployment requirements and over $500 million in missed interest payments. A proposed 2024 deal to divest Dish Network to DirecTV collapsed due to bondholder opposition, leaving the company to navigate mounting debt. By mid-2026, the firm faced a series of Chapter 11 filings, including its Dish DBS unit and Hughes Network Systems, as it struggled to manage liabilities.

To survive, EchoStar turned to massive asset sales. In 2026, the company completed a $23 billion sale of spectrum licenses to AT&T and entered a $17 billion deal with SpaceX. These transactions were intended to address regulatory inquiries and provide necessary liquidity. Amid this turmoil, founder Charlie Ergen returned as CEO in November 2025, tasked with steering the company through its financial crisis and the ongoing challenges of maintaining its wireless and satellite connectivity businesses.
