Is Mexico's Green Party actually green, or just a family-run political business?
In short: The Ecologist Green Party of Mexico is a political anomaly. Despite its name, it has faced international expulsion for supporting the death penalty and is frequently accused of prioritizing public funding over environmentalism. Critics describe it as a family-controlled firm that treats political ideology as a flexible, profitable commodity.
Founded in 1986 by Jorge González Torres, the party has been under the heavy influence of his family for decades. His son, Jorge Emilio González Martínez, took over the presidency in 2001, earning the nickname the Green Child. This dynastic control has led observers to characterize the organization as a private enterprise rather than a traditional political movement. Between 1997 and mid-2021, the party secured approximately 7.4 billion pesos in federal funding, a financial incentive that some analysts argue is the true reason for its existence.
The party's environmental credentials are frequently contested. It is not recognized by the European Green Party, which withdrew its support after the Mexican group campaigned for the death penalty in 2008. Furthermore, party leadership has been caught in controversies involving alleged bribery and corruption. In one notable instance, a video from 2004 appeared to show the younger González negotiating payments for development projects on protected land. Other scandals include the embezzlement of over 500 million pesos during a state government administration in Chiapas and ties between local party officials and organized crime figures.
Rather than adhering to a fixed platform, the party is known for its tactical flexibility. It has formed alliances with major parties across the political spectrum, including the PAN, the PRI, and Morena, often shifting its stance to align with the most likely winner. This strategy has helped it gain seats in the legislature, though it has also resulted in massive fines from electoral authorities for illegal advertising campaigns. Despite these controversies, the party remains a persistent force in Mexican politics, often out-strategizing rivals by focusing on popular, if sometimes contradictory, policy proposals.
