Why a 1920s football trophy looks like an egg to modern eyes
In short: The Egg Bowl is a storied college football rivalry between Mississippi State and Ole Miss. Its name comes from the Golden Egg, a brass trophy commissioned in 1927 to stop fans from tearing down goalposts. Its unique, ovoid shape reflects the blunter, rugby-style footballs used nearly a century ago.
The rivalry, officially the Battle for the Golden Egg, began in 1901. Early matches were intense, but the 1926 game in Starkville proved a turning point. After Ole Miss ended a 13-game losing streak, fans rushed the field, leading to violent clashes where Mississippi State supporters used wooden chairs to defend the goalposts. To prevent future chaos, the Golden Egg was created as a traveling trophy, awarded annually to the winner since 1927.
For decades, the game was a nomadic affair, often held at Mississippi Veterans Memorial Stadium in Jackson to accommodate larger crowds than the campus stadiums could hold. It was not until the 1990s that campus venues were sufficiently expanded and upgraded to host the rivalry consistently. Today, the game alternates between Starkville and Oxford, maintaining a tradition that has been played every year since 1944, interrupted only by the 1943 season during World War II.
The series is defined by dramatic moments and legendary figures. Ole Miss holds a 67–46–6 lead through 2025, bolstered by the tenure of coach Johnny Vaught, who went 19–2–4 against the Bulldogs. The game has seen everything from the 1983 Wind Bowl, where a 40 mph gust famously stalled a potential game-winning field goal, to the 1999 Pick and the Kick, where a deflected pass set up a last-second victory. These encounters, often played during Thanksgiving weekend, remain a central pillar of Mississippi collegiate culture.
