How Eline Powell transformed into a feral mermaid for the screen
In short: Before she became the face of the hit series Siren, Belgian actress Eline Powell built a career through diverse roles in film and television. Her preparation for playing a predatory mermaid involved studying marine life, mastering monofin swimming, and adopting a unique accent inspired by an Icelandic musical icon.
Born Eline Pauwels in Leuven, Belgium, in 1990, Powell is the daughter of biotech co-founders Rudi Pauwels and Carine Claeys. After spending her early years in Mechelen and a brief period in Switzerland, she moved to England, where she graduated from the Royal Academy of Dramatic Arts in 2011. Her early career included a breakout performance in the student film For Elsie, which garnered international recognition at the 2012 Student Academy Awards, and a small role in Dustin Hoffman’s 2012 directorial debut, Quartet.
Powell’s path to international prominence began with her casting as Ryn in the Freeform series Siren in 2016. To embody the feral mermaid, she conducted extensive research into sea creature legends and observed the movement patterns of marine predators. Her physical performance was further honed through training with a free diver to master underwater swimming techniques. For the character's distinct vocal style, she drew inspiration from the accent of Icelandic singer Björk, creating a performance that critics found both magnetic and, in some instances, polarizing.
While IndieWire lauded her ability to convey complex emotions like wonder and menace through physical presence alone, other critics, such as those at TV Guide, were less convinced by her unconventional approach to the role. Despite mixed reviews, Siren became the top new cable drama in the spring of 2018, leading to a second season that premiered in January 2019. Beyond her professional life, Powell married director and animator Lee Lennox, with whom she welcomed a daughter in 2021.
Throughout her career, Powell has navigated a wide range of projects, from the Italian drama Anita B.—where she was named Breakout Actress at the 2014 Capri, Hollywood International Film Festival—to appearances in Game of Thrones and King Arthur: Legend of the Sword. Her journey reflects a commitment to character-driven performance, whether she is portraying a mobster's daughter or a mythical creature from the deep.
